Lake Mburo National Park

Uganda’s Intimate Safari Escape

Located in southwestern Uganda, Lake Mburo National Park is a charming, smaller safari destination covering 260 km² of rolling hills, acacia woodlands, and sparkling lakes. Despite its size, the park offers a rich mix of wildlife and tranquil landscapes, perfect for visitors seeking a more personal, off-the-beaten-path safari experience.

Lake Mburo is known for its zebra herds, impalas, elands, leopards, hippos, and crocodiles, along with elephants, buffaloes, and numerous antelope species. Its waterways attract a wide variety of birdlife, with over 300 species, making it a haven for birdwatchers. The park’s mix of lakes, forests, and open plains ensures that every game drive brings new discoveries.

Visitors can enjoy game drives, boat safaris on Lake Mburo, guided nature walks, and even horseback safaris — one of Uganda’s few parks to offer this unique way to explore the bush. Its compact size allows for easy wildlife spotting and relaxed, intimate encounters with nature.

The best time to visit is during the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) when wildlife is concentrated around the lakes and rivers. Located just a few hours from Kampala, Lake Mburo offers a convenient escape into Uganda’s serene savannahs, making it ideal for shorter safaris or as part of a northern-southern Uganda safari circuit.
