Mt Elgon National Park

Uganda’s Ancient Volcanic Wonderland

Straddling the border of Uganda and Kenya, Mount Elgon National Park is a lush, high-altitude haven covering 1,150 km² around the massive extinct Mount Elgon volcano. Famous for its enormous caldera, deep gorges, and towering cliffs, the park offers a mix of adventure, wildlife, and breathtaking scenery.

The park is a wildlife and birdwatcher’s paradise. Elephants, buffaloes, baboons, duikers, and forest antelopes roam its forests and grasslands, while over 300 bird species, including sunbirds and turacos, delight avid birders. Rare flora such as giant lobelias and endemic orchids make every hike a visual treat.

Visitors can explore a variety of trails, from gentle walks to challenging hikes that lead to Sipi Falls, the spectacular Kapkwata Gorge, and the volcanic summit. The park’s cooler climate and misty forests create a refreshing escape from the heat of the lowlands.

The best time to visit is during the dry seasons (December–February and June–September) for easier trekking and optimal wildlife sightings. Its accessibility from Mbale town makes Mount Elgon ideal for day trips or multi-day hiking adventures, offering both natural beauty and a sense of tranquillity rarely found in Uganda’s parks.

Mount Elgon National Park is perfect for adventurers, nature lovers, and bird enthusiasts, combining rugged volcanic landscapes with rich biodiversity in an unforgettable African wilderness experience.
