Uganda’s Tropical Rainforest Jewel
Nestled in western Uganda along the Democratic Republic of Congo border, Semuliki National Park covers about 220 km² of lush lowland tropical rainforest, hot springs, and winding rivers. As one of Uganda’s oldest forests, Semuliki is a sanctuary for wildlife lovers, birdwatchers, and nature enthusiasts seeking a rich, green escape.
The park is home to forest elephants, primates like chimpanzees and monkeys, duikers, bushbucks, and countless smaller mammals. Its dense canopy shelters over 400 bird species, including rare endemics, making it a true birdwatcher’s paradise. Hot springs and natural salt licks add unique features to this vibrant ecosystem.
Visitors can explore nature trails, guided forest walks, and birding expeditions, immersing themselves in the sights and sounds of this ancient rainforest. The park’s rivers and swamps create picturesque spots for photography and wildlife viewing.
Best visited during the dry seasons (December–February and June–September), Semuliki is accessible from Fort Portal or Bundibugyo, offering a serene and off-the-beaten-path experience. Its mix of tropical forest, wildlife diversity, and cultural insights from local communities makes Semuliki National Park a hidden gem of Uganda’s protected areas.
