Mgahinga Gorilla National Park – Uganda’s Volcanic Gorilla Haven
Nestled in the southwestern corner of Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a compact yet spectacular sanctuary covering 33 km² at the base of the Virunga Mountains. This lush, mountainous park is one of the few places in the world where you can trek mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, making it a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts.
The park is home to golden monkeys, forest elephants, duikers, and various primates, but its star residents are the habituated gorilla families that visitors can meet on guided treks. Every encounter offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of these gentle giants amid misty volcanic slopes and bamboo forests.
Mgahinga is also a haven for hikers and nature lovers. Trails wind through active volcanoes, bamboo zones, and montane forests, culminating in breathtaking summit views of Mount Sabinyo, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura. The park’s cool climate and lush landscapes make trekking comfortable and visually stunning year-round.
Best visited during the dry seasons (June–September and December–February), Mgahinga provides a quieter, less-crowded alternative to Bwindi while offering equally unforgettable gorilla encounters. Its small size, scenic beauty, and rich wildlife make it a hidden gem in Uganda’s remarkable network of protected areas.
