Perched in Rwanda’s far northwest, Volcanoes National Park is the gateway to the breathtaking Virunga Mountains—a chain of dramatic volcanic peaks draped in mist and ancient rainforest. Covering around 160 km², this compact but world-famous park is one of the last strongholds of the endangered mountain gorilla, making it one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations.

Gorilla trekking is the park’s crown jewel. A guided hike through bamboo forests and mossy slopes leads you to one of the park’s habituated gorilla families—an unforgettable, up-close hour spent in the presence of these gentle giants. Alongside gorillas, the forest shelters golden monkeys, forest elephants, buffalo, bushbuck, and an incredible variety of small mammals and primates.

Volcanoes NP is also rich in history. It was here that the legendary researcher Dian Fossey conducted her groundbreaking work, leaving a conservation legacy that still shapes the region today. Trekkers can visit her former research site, nestled between the volcanic peaks.

Scenery lovers are spoiled as well. The towering cones of Karisimbi, Bisoke, Sabyinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura rise above the clouds, offering challenging hikes and crater-lake adventures. Misty bamboo zones, lava flows, and lush mountain vegetation create a landscape straight out of a fantasy film.

With a cool, fresh climate year-round, the best trekking conditions come during the dry seasons (June–September and December–February). Easy access from Kigali—just a few hours by road—makes Volcanoes National Park one of the most convenient great-ape experiences in Africa.

Together with Nyungwe and Akagera, it forms Rwanda’s perfect “gorillas, rainforest, and savannah” circuit.
